Hard bop pianist Wynton Kelly recorded some of his finest solo work in the early '60s, and these Vee Jay sessions are no exception. 1931-1971 combines seven songs originally from the LPs Kelly Great and Someday My Prince Will Come. Kelly's trio for these dates are either bassist Sam Jones and drummer Jimmy Cobb or bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Trumpeter Lee Morgan and tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter are featured on three tracks: "Mama G," "What I Know," and "Sydney." This excellent disc is highly recommended, along with Kelly's other solo efforts recorded for the Verve and Riverside labels. Read More
